The Devils Open Up The 7s Season At Stony Brook

After back-to-back weekends of snow cancellations, the Devils finally got their first weekend of rugby in. They travelled to Stony Brook University on Saturday for the first 7s tournament of the season.

A 2-hour rain delay pushed the first match of the day back to 11am. Binghamton and Fordham opened up the tournament. Unfortunately, Fordham came out on top 33-0.

Next, the Devils faced host Stony Brook. This match was closer than their first, but Stony Brook edged out Binghamton. Greg Lenane scored the only Devil try in this game.

The last game of pool play for Binghamton was against Kings Point. Since both teams had fallen to both Stony Brook and Fordham earlier in the day, the winner would take 3rd place in the pool and advance to the Bowl Semi Finals. From the start of the match, Binghamton controlled the ball and dominated the game. After tries by Conor Horan, Greg Lenane, and Nick Coppola, the Devils pulled away with a 17-0 victory. Their record improved to 1-2 on the day, finished third in their pool, and advanced to the Bowl Semis.

Binghamton met Brockport in the Bowl Semi Finals. Again, the Devils came out of the gate aggressive as hooker Nick Coppola scored the first try. Brockport quickly responded with a long run along the sidelines for a try of their own. Greg Lenane ran through defenders to score his third try of the day, and the Devils took a 10-7 lead going into the half. In the second half, Binghamton played shutdown defense and effectively held the ball on offensive. Freshman Joe LoPinto refused to be tackled along the sideline and scored a final Devil try to cement their victory. The final score was 17-7 and Binghamton advanced to the Bowl Final.

In the final game of the day, the Devils faced an impressive Kutztown B team. From the opening kickoff, Binghamton maintained possession and moved the ball effectively from sideline to sideline. Unfortunately, Kutztown B capitalized on each of Binghamton’s few key mistakes and came away with the Bowl. Captain Pierce Butler scored a try, but the Devils fell to Kutztown 19-7. Binghamton finished 5th among ERC teams and 10th overall.

The next tournament in the ERC 7s Series is at Colgate next Sunday, April 9th.
