BURFC played a lot of rugby this weekend: The 7s team went to the second ERC tournament of the spring, while the remaining club members scrimmaged Montclair State University in 15s.
The Devils kicked off the 7s day against the tournament’s host, Colgate. Trailing in the second half, Luke Pearson scored the first try for BU. However, they could not come back from the deficit, and the final score after 14 minutes was 19-5.
Next up was Stony Brook, and the Devils found themselves in an early hole as the Seawolves took an early first half lead. But, Binghamton didn’t stop fighting. Second half tries by Jason McKenna and Nick Coppola. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, and The Devils went down 36-10.
The third match of the day was against Brockport. The Devils’ tries were scored by Jason McKenna, Pierce Butler, Brian Burke, and Alex Mason. However, Binghamton fell short, 33-22.
Finally, Binghamton met Brockport once again in their fourth and final match, which was also to decide the 9th/10th place teams of the tournament. This meeting was a much better showing for the Devils, and they took home their first victory of the day. Nick Coppola powered through the defensive line for two consecutive tries. Brian Burke added another try after a last second offload from Brett Rothberg. Brockport missed a conversion after a last minute try that would have sent the game into overtime. BURFC came out on top 17-15. The Devils finished 9th in the tournament with a 1-3 record
Despite tries by Hunter Reiter and Jacob Escobar, the Devils lost the 15s scrimmage to Montclair State University 22-10.
