Stony Brook took a big step toward clinching the Empire Conference with a 26-24 defeat of the US Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point Friday night.
Stony Brook led 26-10 but had to hold off a furious King’s Point charge late in the game. Brian McIlvain, Jon Feldman, Bart Sweeney, and Bryan Michel all scored tries and PJ Abelein added three conversions for the Seawolves.
The game was a makeup of an earlier fixture postponed due to the government shutdown in October. Saturday, Stony Brook holds their regularly-scheduled league game, as they host Iona. If the Seawolves win with a bonus point, as they did on Friday, they will clinch 1st in the conference.
If they fail to get a bonus-point victory, and Brockport wins with a bonus point, then the November 9 game between Stony Brook and Brockport at Brockport will be for the conference title, although it remains mathematically possible that St. Bonaventure could sneak in if both teams falter.
