After a long 5 hours on a yellow school bus from Binghamton to the Bronx, the Devil’s filed onto Fordham’s Murphy Field Saturday night ready for their season opener against the Rams. The conditions were not favorable as it had rained all day and continued to do so throughout the game making the turf field very slick.
Team Captain Chris Mallinson made the team aware that the Devils would receive the ball first. From the very opening plays, the theme of the game was Binghamton pack (forwards) dominance. The Devil’s held the ball in the Fordham redzone for nearly 25 minutes of the first half, but couldn’t score as every ball brought into the try-zone was called as held up. Fordham briefly brought the ball into Binghamton territory and was able to get a score out of it late in the first half.
Binghamton Kicked off the second half, and completely dominated the rest of the game, with a score by Captain Nick Coppola within the first 2 minutes of the half, then 2 consecutive tries by Senior Hooker Tyler Poli, a penalty kick made by Senior Fly Half Kevin Walsh, and finally to close the game another Nick Coppola try (with conversion made by Kevin Walsh) for a final score of 25-5.
Standout players of the game besides Coppola and Poli included Outside Center Alex Mason in his first A-side start, and Inside Center Zack Lenane who made a tackle during the game which multiple teammates described as “The hardest hit they’ve ever seen on a Rugby pitch”.
