Colgate University hosted the second of three 2017 Empire Rugby Conference 7s tournaments this past Sunday. After finishing 10th at Stony Brook’s 7s tournament the previous weekend, the Devils certainly sought to bounce back this weekend.
The Devils came out firing on all cylinders in their first match. Binghamton first faced Colgate B and looked like a completely different team than a week ago. Greg Lenane, who scored 3 first half tries and another in the second half, was the clear man of this match. Ray Henry added a pair of his own, and Joe LoPinto touched one down as well. The Devils started the day with a dominate 41-0 win over Colgate B.
Next, Binghamton met the Fordham Rams. Although they didn’t come away with the victory, the Devils battled for 14 tough minutes and gave a much better fight than they had a week prior at Stony Brook. The Rams came away with a 22-5 victory as Billy Cusack scored the lone Binghamton try.
The Devils’ third match of the day was against Syracuse. This was the first time the two teams met since the Devils won a thriller over ‘cuse in the Empire Rugby Conference Championship last November. Syracuse certainly came out hot in the first half on Sunday and held a 19-5 halftime lead. Brian Burke touched down the Devils’ only first half try. Though facing a deficit, the Devils wouldn’t give up without a fight. Binghamton battled for possession and scored two tries courtesy of captain Pierce Butler and Chet Curtis. Unfortunately, the Hammer Heads were able to hold on and secure a 19-17 victory.
For the final match of pool play, Binghamton faced the University of Vermont. Greg Lenane added his fifth try of the day, Joe LoPinto had his second, and Jack Meyers touched down his first of the season. However, Vermont handed Binghamton their second close loss in a row. The final was 22-19.
The Devils finished 4th out of 5 in their pool, so their final match of the day was against the 4th place team from the opposite pool: Brockport. The two had met last weekend at Stony Brook, and the Devils beat the Doggies 17-7. This meeting wasn’t much different as the Devils comfortably won 24-12. Tries were awarded to Brian Burke, Greg Lenane, and two to Pierce Butler. With the victory, Binghamton finished 7th among 10 teams at Colgate.
Next weekend, the Devils are off. But, they host the third and final ERC 7s tournament the following weekend on April 22nd.
