Binghamton Finishes 1-4 at Stony Brook 7s

This past weekend, The Devils competed in the first of three Empire Rugby Conference 7s tournaments of the spring 2016 season. The Devils fought hard all day but unfortunately did not come home with any hardware.

Binghamton opened up the day by defeating Brockport 22-0. Zack Lenane opened the scoring with two tries, and the points kept on coming. Jason McKenna and Chris Mallinson added tries to complete the shutout.

In their second game, Alex Mason’s try wasn’t enough to beat Syracuse; the final score was 17-7. Next, the Devils suffered a disappointing loss to Colgate.

Next, Binghamton met Syracuse again in the Plate Semi-Final. ‘Cuse held a 7 point lead until Chris Mallinson broke free along the sideline for a try, lessening the deficit to 2. However, the Hammerheads held on to beat out the Devils 12-10.

In their final game, Binghamton lost another heartbreaker to Kutztown University in the Bowl Final. The Devils finished 1-4 on the day.

After the tournament, team captain and president, Nick Coppola, made it clear that the team will be working twice as hard in preparation for next weekend’s tournament at Colgate: “The overall result of the tournament does not reflect how the team actually performed. In just about every game, the team was contesting for the win. This past weekend gave some of the younger guys an opportunity to to strut their stuff on the pitch and remind some of the old boys that their positions are always up for grabs. The first tournament is always a learning experience for us, and these 15 guys are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities on the pitch.”
