Binghamton Closes Out 7s Season At Home

This past Saturday, the Devils hosted the 4th annual Binghamton 7s Tournament, which was also the third and final Empire Rugby Conference 7s tournament of the season. The Devils kicked off the day with the tournament’s first game at 9:00 am against Syracuse. Binghamton came out strong to start the day with a dominating 20-0 victory. Tries were scored by Ray Henry, Brian Burke, Nick Coppola, and Conor Horan.

Next up, the Devils faced the Doggies from Brockport. The two teams had met twice already in the past couple of weeks, and the Devils came out on top both times. Saturday’s match was a back-and-forth one as there were multiple lead changes late in the second half. Nick Coppola, Brian Burke, Ray Henry, and Billy Cusack touched down tries for the Devils, but unfortunately, the Doggies earned the victory after scoring a try on the final play. The final score was 31-24.

For the third and final game of pool play, Binghamton faced off against Colgate. Binghamton fought hard, but lost another one by a score of 19-5. The only Devil awarded a try in this one was Ray Henry. After pool play finished, three of the four teams in Binghamton’s pool had a 1-2 record: Binghamton, Syracuse, and Brockport. The tie breaker to determine which of these teams would be seeded second was point differential. Fortunately, the Devils had higher point differentials up to this point than both Brockport and Syracuse. So, the Devils were awarded the second seed and a Plate Semi-Final berth.

In the Plate Semi-Final, Binghamton met the University of Albany. Binghamton and Albany had not met in this 7s season prior to this match. Much like the Binghamton v.s. Brockport game earlier in the day, the Binghamton v.s. Albany game went down to the wire. Unfortunately, tries by Ray Henry, Nick Coppola, and Brian Burke weren’t enough to overcome Albany. The final score of this Plate Semi-Final match was 19-17. The Devils’ record on the day was 1-3. Binghamton placed 6th among ERC teams on the day and finished 6th in the ERC for the 7s season.

Although the 7s season is over for Binghamton, there is still some more 15s this spring. This Friday night, April 28th, the Devils are traveling to Cortland for the 2nd annual Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser Game. This game will be a preview of what is to come next year since the Cortland Wolfpack will be joining the new Liberty Conference along with Binghamton.

Try totals for the day:

Ray Henry: 4

Brian Burke: 3

Nick Coppola: 3

Billy Cusack: 1

Conor Horan: 1
