The first half was hard fought with both teams coming out full of energy and nerves. With the wing having graduated 4 of the top wingers in the conference, wide play was hard to come by. With a pack-heavy offense, both teams fought hard for field position. The Gaels put the first points on the board on a wide ball that broke the line and took to the try zone. A bright spot came for the Devils on a lineout play that saw Sammy Ahmed (5th Year Hooker) throw a ball to dummy jumper Nick Palazzolo for a big downfield break that took them deep inside the Iona 22 meter line. Binghamton kept the pressure on until the closing minutes of the first half when Iona began moving the ball back down the field. The Gaels’ fly-half scored an Sports Center Top 10 try in the closing seconds when he dropped a kick in behind the back line and was able to touch it down just before going out the back of the try zone.
The Devils came out swinging and with Tim Coyne (Sophmore – Flanker) & Zach Lenane (Sophmore – Prop) coming on with fresh legs, they began to drive down the field. After being held up on his first trip into the try zone, Nick Palazzolo touched the ball down and put the first points on the board for BURFC. Although the conversion was no good, the try lifted the Devils spirits. Unfortunately, Iona put in another try before Christian Randell took the ball on the 5 meter line and lowered a shoulder & ran through a Gaels’ winger for their second try to bring the score to 21-10. The opposition put another 7 on the board in garbage time as the Devils began to rotate through subs in the closing minutes.
Sophomore Flanker Tommy Sullivan & Sophmore Endwing Chris Mallinson both made strong debuts by making tackles all around the pitch. We thank the alumni for their continued support and work to further the progress of the club through the efforts of the BURA.
A disappointing start coming off such a successful season, the Devils have a quick turnaround kicking off a downstate doubleheader Friday, September 14th at 6pm at Kings Point and finishing Sunday, September 16th at noon at Fordam .
